The Mediaeval Garden – Nature Feared
In the Middle Ages, gardens were seen as a refuge from the terrors of nature, since the irregular earth was thought to bear the marks of Satan and the Fall of Man. Walled enclosures surrounded a haven of tranquillity filled with medicinal herbs, delicious fruits and fragrant flowers – a Garden of Eden keeping the Devil’s wilderness at bay.
